Stateroom Bookings...a participatory adventure designed to help you build your skills!

Dinner at Roche Harbor

Stateroom bookings provide the perfect stepping stone between your core ASA certifications and your first bareboat charter, serve as an excellent refresher if you have been away from boating for a while, or offer a great opportunity to keep your skills sharp in years where you don’t have enough crew to charter a boat. These unstructured courses take place on one of our 40’ - 45’ 3 stateroom, 2 head monohull sailboats, allowing you to practice and build your skills on a larger vessel. Your USCG Captain/Instructor will serve as coach and mentor, while you will be active crew, participating in the day to day running of the boat to the extent that your skill level allows. You may be steering, navigating, trimming sails, helping to set anchor or handling lines during docking. Everyone aboard, including the Captain, also pitches in to help with cooking and dishes. For those with their ASA 101 certification, ASA 111 - Sailing Refresher is available as an option. We schedule most of our stateroom bookings during flotillas so that you are able to experience the camaraderie of flotilla cruising and have the opportunity to get to know new and interesting cruising grounds.

There are two staterooms available per boat. The tuition is comprised of two parts. The rate for the stateroom itself is the same whether you will have one person or two in the stateroom. In addition to the stateroom rate, there is a per person fee that covers food, beverages, fuel and moorage. Boarding the night before departure, linens and towels included. You are encouraged to arrive around 7pm to preboard your vessel on the evening prior to your departure date so that you can get to know your Captain and other crew members.

  • Spring/Fall (before 6/7 or after 9/19)

    $4595 for a stateroom + $630 per person
        14-days: $7495 for a stateroom + $730 per person

  • Summer (6/7 - 9/19)
        7-days:
    $4065 for a stateroom + $525 per person

Please contact us at 360-671-8339 or school@sanjuansailing.com to reserve a stateroom. Both staterooms do need to be booked for a trip to be considered "a go". Final confirmation is made 45 days before the start of the trip. If we do not have dates available that will work for your schedule we can likely add additional options (depending on boat and instructor availability).

There is no experience required to participate in the stateroom bookings as long as you have a willingness to learn and participate. Be aware that most of the 10-day or longer stateroom bookings will venture in to Canadian waters so a passport will be required.

ASA 111/Sailing Review is available as an option for an additional $30. The prerequisite for ASA 111 is ASA 101.

What boat will I be on?

Most stateroom bookings will occur on one of our 3 stateroom/2 head 39' - 45' sailing monohulls. There will be two staterooms available on each of the three stateroom boats, with the captain having the third stateroom. This approach leaves the salon and galley available for those that rise early or go to bed later. If demand and boat availablity warrant we may be able to use a 4 stateroom, 2 head sailing monohull (in which case 3 staterooms would be available). When you reserve your stateroom please let us know if you have any special needs that might affect boat choice (eg. if you use a CPAP while sleeping or need a bimini due to sun sensitivity).

I have special dietary needs. Are you able to accommodate those?

We will do our absolute best to accommodate your dietary needs. Please help us do so by being specific about what you can and cannot eat, and common substitutions you use (eg. almond milk instead of dairy milk).

What about alcohol?

Alcohol consumption (2 drink maximum) is allowed after you are docked or anchored for the day. You are welcome to bring your favorite beverages along (be aware that there are quantity limitations if cruising to Canada).

What should I bring?

Linens, towels and food provisions are provided, so you only need to bring your clothing, toiletries, personal gear and any required identification/documentation. You'll find a link to our suggested packing list here.

How do I reserve my stateroom?

Simply contact us at 360-671-8339 or school@sanjuansailing.com. To confirm your stateroom booking you will pay a reservation deposit equivalent to 30% of the stateroom rate. The remaining balance will be due 45 days before the start of the trip. Both staterooms do need to be booked for a trip to be considered "a go". Final confirmation is made 45 days before the start of the trip, at the same time as balance payment.
